Missouri: Special Session Adjourns
July 26, 2017

Lawmakers adjourned the year’s second special session after passing legislation that enhances abortion restrictions in the state. Specifically, the measure requires annual inspections of abortion clinics, requires such clinics to establish detailed emergency provisions for complications that arise from the procedure, enhances protections for whistleblowers, and increases regulations on the handling of fetal tissue.

The measure also grants the state attorney general, rather than local prosecutors, jurisdiction over abortion-related crimes. Governor Eric Greitens (R), who has indicated support over the final draft of the legislation, is expected to sign it into law.
