Colorado: Special Session Called
September 19, 2017

Governor. John Hickenlooper (D) has called the legislature into a special session, starting October 2, to correct a bill-drafting error discovered after the regular session adjourned in May.

Specifically, Senate Bill 267 overhauled the state hospital funding program and eliminated the 2.9 percent tax on recreational marijuana in lieu of a five percent increase in the special sales tax on the drug (from 10 to 15 percent). However, the new law erroneously removed funding from several agencies that rely on the tax revenues, including Regional Transportaion District (Denver), the Denver Zoo, and other cultural organizations.
