Staff Manager 

We are looking for a highly, business-savvy professional who has a passion for and demonstrated experience in managing a staff. This person truly enjoys coaching and teaching others, and has had past success in doing so. It is important that they are comfortable with change and enjoy working in a tight-knit, flexible management team.

The Staff Manager will lead a team of 12 legislative and regulatory policy research analysts in their daily activities, to include:

  • Managing schedules for hourly workers, including approving remote work, overtime, and leave requests.
  • Delegation and detailed oversight of routine research staff assignments and special projects.
  • Regular training and coaching of the research staff.
  • Ongoing quality control of and feedback on researchers' work.
  • Developing improvements to analyst workflow processes.
  • Conducting employee performance reviews, and handling routine staff disciplinary matters.
  • Hiring and training of new researchers as team needs dictate.

Additional duties (comprising up to 30% of the Staff Manager’s time) may include:

  • Working closely with peers in our Quality Assurance, Client Success and IT Development groups to ensure fulfillment of client and prospective client requests, problems and needs.
  • Performing legislative and regulatory policy research at busy times as a backup to analyst staff. 
  • Handling routine office matters, as the senior staff member on premises.

Let us know about your hands-on experience managing others, even if it is outside your professional experience. The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated experience in legislative and/or regulatory monitoring or legal research for a similar organization (e.g., tracking company, law firm, trade association, non-profit, corporation, etc. or on Capitol Hill). Expertise in the use of legal research databases, and familiarity with Microsoft Access or other database management systems, is desired. An educational background in political science, law, or business is a plus.

Our Old Town Alexandria location is within walking distance of the King Street Metro. The office environment is casual. The job is performed in our our Old Town office, Monday – Friday, on a full-time basis, with the opportunity for occasional remote work. Salary range for this position starts in the $70Ks and will go up commensurate with experience. Benefits include subsidized health care, Simple IRA employer contributions, paid holiday/leave, and a casual work environment.

Researcher/Document Reviewers - Partial Remote Work

We are looking for analytical, highly-detailed professionals who excel at working independently. The ideal candidate is adept at working in online databases, has a passion for policy research, and has demonstrated experience in legislative, regulatory, or legal research or tracking through experience gained on Capitol Hill, with a law firm or in library science. A specialized background in health care, finance/insurance, labor, or tax issues, or in local ordinance procedures, are strong advantages.

Completion of a bachelor’s degree in any field is a requirement, with education in law or political science an advantage.

Specific duties of this position include: 

  • Online review of county and city legislative documents
  • Categorization of documents based on client preferences
  • Researching local and state government-specific policies and procedures
  • Assisting with the development of improved internal research-related processes*
  • Training and helping to oversee the research of others*

The Researcher/Document Reviewer position is full-time, with a starting pay in the $45-55K/year range (includes overtime which is required during the first four months of the year and occasional Saturday hours all year) commensurate with experience. Only those candidates who have had at least two years of experience in the areas marked with an asterisk* above will be considered at the higher pay range. Partial remote work is allowed once an employee is fully trained.
